On the National Register of Historic Places, this small stone house is one of the oldest houses in the county. It was built in 1743 by John Hays who found his way into Berkeley County with a small Baptist group. Windowsills made as storage boxes are an ususual feature of the house. A trap door with a ladder leads from the second floor “Indian closet” in which the house occupants could hide from attack. In front of the house is a dooryard laid with stones. Just east of the house is the old Baptist Cemetery.
Location: WV51 and Old Dominion Road, Gerrardstown
