Occupying a strategic high point overlooking both the town of Paw Paw and the Potomac River crossing, Camp Hill was so named for its uses during two wars. It served as the encampment site of General Edward Braddock’s army during the 18th-century French and Indian War. A century later, it was the site of Camp Chase, a Federal camp during the Civil War established to guard the railroad which ran along the river. More than 16,000 Union soldiers were stationed here.
Located on the road into Paw Paw, Camp Hill is now a local cemetery encircled by a rutted dirt road. It offers a spectacular panoramic view of mountains to the west and the town and Potomac River to the north.
Location: Approximately 1 mile south of the town of Paw Paw on WV9
